Speech is a powerful tool. What you say sometimes matters more than your actions. It’s especially true in family law cases. Are you angry with your ex-spouse and sent a mean tweet? Don’t go on Facebook and say negative things about your ex-spouse. Because guess what will happen? That spouse will show them to their lawyer and they could be printed off and used as exhibits in court. This is also true for text messages. Don’t say anything that you wouldn’t be comfortable with being read at a deposition or trial. This is especially difficult when you’re angry at your ex-spouse. But again, the most important tool is that words matter. It’s especially true if you say something that you don’t mean that can severely damage your case.
